Katarina Ševic – Social Motions
PARCELLA SERIE 2007
From one corner to the other, 120 individuals cross Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum in a slow and ordered synchronicity. Citizens of all ages have been invited to participate, transforming Skulpturenpark into a stage for an unrehearsed, mass choreography. They are given three simple rules: «Walk slowly», «Maintain a fixed distance», and «Stay silent».
What are the conceptual, symbolic, and aesthetic values that contribute to the formation of mass displays such as protests, group gymnastics, ritual gatherings, processions or, simple everyday situations that transpire in market places or high-traffic zones? Influenced by Siegfried Kracauer’s essay, The Ornament of the Mass (1927), Social Motions experiments with the relationships between the control of power and organized social aesthetics.
