Ayreen Anastas & Rene Gabri
We Draw Our Hope On Berlin, 2007
Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri projected the current struggle against the separation-wall
being built in occupied Palestine onto the location of Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum.
In 2006, Anastas and Gabri took 16 trips in occupied Palestine and Israel.
Their chosen destinations came from research and from discussions with a variety
of Palestinian and Israeli academics, activists, and artists. Their intent
was to use each trip as a kind of impetus for a set of events and conversations
about the division. At Skulpturenpark, Anastas and Gabri gave a presentation
of their results with recorded interviews and conversations. This served as
a prelude for a workshop where they worked with the public to re-make signs
from the existing wall in Palestine, and historical signs opposing the Berlin
Wall.
These signs are now on view at Skulpturenpark, site of the former
Wall, through September. In so doing, the artists present the public
with both provocative and personal questions: How should one's experience
of and opposition to the wall dividing East and West Berlin transfer to the
current divisions in Palestine?
